How to measure your hips
Your hips are measured at the widest part of the pelvis, buttocks included. For trousers, skirts and swimwear, it is often the hips rather than the waist that decide the size.
How to measure
- Stand with your feet together, in underwear or thin clothes.
- Place the tape measure around your pelvis, at the fullest part of the buttocks, usually about 20 cm (8 in) below your natural waist.
- Move it up and down a few centimetres: keep the position where the measurement is largest.
- Check in a mirror that the tape is level, then read the measurement without squeezing.
Common mistakes
- Measuring at the hip bones, too high.
- Standing with your feet apart: the measurement increases.
- Measuring over jeans, which add one or two centimetres.
