Measure your finger and find your ring size

A ring size is based on its inner circumference: a 54 mm finger is a French size 54 and a US size 7. So all you need is an accurate measurement of your finger.

How to measure

  1. Measure at the end of the day, with hands at room temperature: fingers swell slightly during the day and in the heat.
  2. Wrap a thin strip of paper or a piece of string around the base of the finger, without squeezing.
  3. Mark the point where the strip overlaps, and check that it slides over the knuckle: the ring will have to pass it.
  4. Unroll it and measure the length with a ruler, in millimetres, then find your size in the chart below.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring in the morning or in cold weather: the ring will be tight in summer.
  • A string that stretches or paper that is too thick.
  • Forgetting the knuckle: a ring that fits at the base of the finger may not pass the joint.
  • Measuring another finger, or the other hand: sizes often differ by one or two units.

What this measurement is for

Rings, wedding bands and engagement rings. To buy a ring as a surprise, measure the inner circumference of a ring the person already wears on the same finger instead.
